One of today’s most successful bronze artists, world-famous for his colourful and expressive frog sculptures, will be making a special appearance at a York gallery this September.
Tim Cotterill, also known as ‘Frogman’, will be at Castle Fine Art based in York’s The Coppergate Centre on Wednesday 20th September, 6-8pm, to unveil a newly curated exhibition of his work, including two new show frogs produced exclusively for collectors in the UK.
At the age of 15, Tim left school to complete a six year engineer apprenticeship, which sparked his love for metalwork. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Tim created radical wheeled vehicles and metal sculptures of animals and birds.
In 1990, the Leicester-born artist moved to California, where he built his Venice Beach studio, 'Paradise', complete with a frog and koi pond.
It is within this very studio that Tim devotes himself to the creation of his unique bronze frog sculptures. His frogs are made using the labour-intensive lost wax bronze casting process. Once cast, they are meticulously cleaned and polished before being patinated to achieve dramatic and brilliant colours.
The artist said: "Frogs are fun creatures! I have tried to capture their individual spirit, their fun, and their joy. Life is fun! I hope my art brings more happiness and joy into people’s lives."
Felicity Whittingham, York’s Gallery Manager for Castle Fine Art – fine art publisher Washington Green’s nationwide network of high street galleries – said:
“Cotterill’s frogs have been dubbed captivating, colourful and expressive, and rightly so. Each frog is a labour of love and we’re looking forward to hearing the processes that go into making them so beautiful. He has collectors worldwide and to have him come to the gallery is a big honour.
